The Hermitage offers a serene, down-to-earth, sense-of-place retreat for writers, artists, naturalists and herbalists alike. Our gardens feature hundreds of native wildflowers and medicinal herbs such as boneset, anise hyssop, wood betony and witch hazel. Our marsh is home to turtles, beavers, heron and mating wood ducks in the spring. Lift a leaf and you might find a spotted salamander, peeper or red eft. Dragonflies, swallowtails, honeybees and hummers grace the summer air, while tree frogs & warblers sing from the branches. You might even see a fox kit, owl, or a pair of sandhill cranes.
For those interested in hiking, birding or mushroom hunting, the trailheads of the Great Brook Trail and Dowst-Cate Forest are within walking distance. Pawtuckaway's Round Pond trailhead, 2.5 miles down the road, is a prime destination for ice climbing and bouldering. The Deerfield Fairground hosts the annual New Hampshire Wool & Sheep Festival in May, while the coastal town of Portsmouth, a 30-mile hop from The Hermitage, is where you'll find tugboats, seafood, coffee houses & art galleries. Or you are welcome to just sit on the porch or in the pavilion to knit, nap, stretch, sketch, meditate, or read.
